The wound management market represents an intriguing combination of low-tech, high volume products and high-tech low volume products. There is a remarkable diversity in ths market spanning very traditional, inert wound dressings, bioactive or other complex dressings and emergent technologies as diverse as instrumented systems like negative pressure wound therapy, tissue engineered grafts and growth factors.
The result is a dynamic market in which traditional wound care product sales representing over $1 billion annually are seeing erosion by multiple new wound care product types. The upside can be deceiving, however, since well established traditional wound care products will continue to show considerable absolute revenue growth over the forecast period, despite relatively low compound annual growth rates, simply because their established revenue base is high at the outset. Conversely, emerging wound care product segments are demonstrating characteristically high early stage growth, but this is proceeding from considerably lower absolute sales.
The result is a ranking of wound care product segments that sort differently based on absolute growth of annual sales from 2013 to 2021 versus compound annual growth over this period; the segments highlighted in red those whose rankings differ when considering absolute sales growth versus relative growth.
