The global market for vertebroplasty devices in spine surgery continues to grow, despite the slowdown in 2009 that suggested the market would be flat. Orthopedic surgeons and interventional radiologists continue to perform the procedure. Industry views the market as still underpenetrated, and the European market for treatment of vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) continues to grow at a rapid rate.
Vertebroplasty is demonstrating a common theme in orthopedics (and many device) markets, which is that it is a growing market despite flat or declining prices as a result of strong demand arising from a growing (older) population and positive clinical outcomes of devices. Consequently, prices and procedure volumes are going in different directions.
