Evidence from recent surveys, medical device manufacturer interviews and other data sources confirm that metabolic/bariatric surgery is on the rise at the aggregate annual growth rate of over 9%, but with even higher growth rate for procedures to implant the adjustable gastric band.
As shown in the graph below, the total number of bariatric surgery procedures is forecast to reach about 539,299 by 2013, growing by about 16.3%. Adjustable Gastric Banding, despite demonstrating a less dramatic growth rate than in prior years, is nonetheless expected to have the greatest compound annual growth rate for 2004-2013, at about 23%. This will be followed by the growth rate for gastric bypass at 12.4%. Biliopancreatic diversion is forecast to be nearly flat at 1.4% growth through the same time period.
