Negative Pressure Wound Therapy: KCI’s New Portable System Going to Market

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is among a list of physical wound healing systems (as opposed to traditional wound products like dressings) that are seeing high growth in the wond care market (see report Designed to hasten wound healing, particularly for chronic, slow-healing wounds, NPWT controls the wound environment by, among other features, its reduced atmospheric pressure on the wound.

Among its benefits, according to KCI, are:

• Removing exudate and potentially infectious material
• Stimulating perfusion
• Reducing edema
• Promoting formation of granulation tissue
• Protecting the wound bed and providing a closed, moist wound-healing environment

Kinetic Concepts (KCI) has had its V.A.C. system on the market, but has now gained FDA approval to market its portable unit, the V.AC.Via which will expand the caseload and market for NPWT.
