Bariatric Surgical Society Renamed to Reflect Obesity-Metabolic Disease Link

Reflecting its recognition that bariatric surgery is not only an effective treatment for morbid [tag]obesity[/tag] but has also demonstrated its efficacy in the treatment of specific metabolic diseases and other conditions, including Type 2 [tag]diabetes[/tag], hypercholesterolemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, [tag]hypertension[/tag] and even obstructive [tag]sleep apnea[/tag], the American Society for Bariatric Surgery has changed its name to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. These were the findings of a 2004 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), which also indicated that problems associated with joint disease, asthma and infertility were also resolved or ameliorated by bariatric surgery.
